GPH ABERDEENSHIRE LEAGUE
HISTORY
The Aberdeenshire League in the current format is a Senior competition with an U20 age ruling. Prior to this the competition ran in tandem with the other Association competitions.
The first Aberdeenshire "league" was the Gershon Cup which was introduced in season 1893-94 and competed for by city clubs Aberdeen, Orion and Victoria United. This competition ceased at the end of 1896/97 and was replaced in 1898/99 by the Rhodesia Cup with the same clubs participating until 1902/03 when the afore mentioned clubs amalgamated to form the Aberdeen Football Club in the current format. An Aberdeenshire League under that very banner was in existance for season 1899/00 but disbanded without all the fixtures being played.
The league was re-formed in 1919 as the North Eastern League. It was renamed the Aberdeenshire League in 1921. It was also known as the Aberdeen & District League. The league ran successfully for over 25 years interupted only by the two world wars however, in the 1950's it was considered to be a secondary competition to the Highland League and disbanded in 1953. It reformed in 1994 intitually as an Under 21 league.
